3 Bedroom Cottage in Algonquin Highlands, Dorset
The BlueBird Cottage is situated on 8 acres of landscaped and natural forest on the North end of beautiful Lake Kushog. It is family oriented, and over all it is clean, modern and user friendly; great for kids!
It is easily accessed by its own short private road off Hwy 35, about 15 minutes South of Dorset and 25 minutes North of Minden. Situated on Lake Kushog, it's 2 hours or so North from the Hwy 400 and 401 intersection, most of it traveling on 4 lane highway. It's not a big deal to go back to the city if needed for a day or overnight.
There is shopping and an LCBO, 15 minutes away with golf, art studios and all kinds of recreational places to visit in the general area.
The cottage is a 3 bedroom chalet style design with a large downstairs and upstairs. Downstairs has the kitchen, bathroom, one bedroom and living room, with a screened in front porch. The appliances include a large fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, BBQ; pretty much all you'll need. General linen such as bath towels, tea towels, and sheets and pillow cases are plentiful.
The drinking water from a natural well is excellent, pure and tastes great. More info below...
Spring & Fall
The BlueBird is insulated and comfortable for the Fall and Spring seasons.
Spring is May to June and Fall September to November. July and August are high season.
The fresh air Spring is wonderful up here as you can imagine. With our 8 acres and nearby Frost Centre Park with a hundred + acres, there are lots of hiking trails; the forest and lake have their own unique feel and smell.
The leaves have yet to come out, and you can see and walk deep into the trees off trail.
The Fall is nothing less than amazing. The forest blooms and hiking and canoeing are wonderful. Nearby Dorset tower offers a spectacular view of the Algonquin Highlands. Can't be beat.
The upstairs has two bedrooms, one master and one with bunk beds and a single. Perhaps the best thing about the second floor is that it also has a large play area, with TV, DVD, etc for those hopefully few rainy days. It also has a step out balcony for drinks and conversation at 5...or anytime...
Kids have their own playhouse near the cottage and away from the water. Screened and dry, with chalkboard and toys, it can be used for overnight adventures. It's the number 2 attraction for kids after the beach, and number one for parents because the kids spent so much time there.
The cottage is set back about 100 yards from water, away from the hubbub and boat noise. You walk down a beautiful open path to the sandy bottomed lake and dock. The dry sand part of the beach varies with the season. Early Spring the water is up to the stone frontage, and as the summer goes on, the sandy beach grows to 10 feet of sand castle sand by August.
The first 10 to 15 feet of water is great for young kids, as the depth goes from 3â? deep to a foot. There is a large dock for sun bathing, and a raft to swim to where the water is about 12 feet deep.
Besides a number of water toys, you also have access to 2 canoes, a kayak and a paddle boat.
Rogers and Bell have cell towers in the area with great reception.
Our cottage is just down the road, and we are always ready to help with stuff, baby or dog sit a bit and share a drink at the dock.
Available Saturday to Saturday, Check in Saturday at 4 pm and Check out at 12 pm following Saturday.
A few of our regular guests have been staying here for over 10 years, and book their time by January for the summer, which is the best recommendation we can offer.
Besides the beach area with 2 canoes and 2 kayaks and plenty of kids water toys, we have the children's play house ( See Pictures ) with chalk board and tables...big enough to sleep in for an overnight adventure. We have 8 acres of forest, and lot's of places to sit in the sun and contemplate life or just nap.
The cottage itself has an extra large upstairs living room with lots of play space to build pillow forts, play games, watch a movie, or just sit around sit around and talk . There are patio door here that go out to the balcony with a forest and water view.
There are a lot of places in the area for day trips. Golf, Algonquin Park, small towns, mini-put, shopping, and crafts to mention a few.
